A dose-response meta-analysis of dietary lutein and zeaxanthin intake in relation to risk of age-related cataract.
Regular intake of foods containing lutein and zeaxanthin may contribute positively to the prevention of cataract formation.
The purpose of this meta-analysis was to confirm the protective effects of dietary lutein and zexanthin against cataracts. A total of 6 studies involving 44,999 participants and 4,416 cases of cataracts were included in this meta-analysis.
Researchers noticed habitual consumers of foods packed with lutein and zeaxanthin exhibited low risk of developing cataracts. In conclusion, this meta-analysis suggests that high dietary exposure to lutein and zeaxanthin may play a beneficial role in the prevention of cataracts.
