Associations of dietary intakes of anthocyanins and berry fruits with risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus: a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies.
Consistent consumption of berries and anthocyanins from food sources may decrease an individual's disposition to type 2 diabetes.
This study examined the role of regular dietary ingestion of berries and anthocyanins in the prevention of type 2 diabetes. Researchers systematically reviewed data extracted from 8 cohort studies involving more than 350,000 subjects and over 25,000 cases of diabetes.
Researchers observed that frequent consumers of berries and anthocyanins had less chances of developing type 2 diabetes compared to low- and non-consumers of these types of foods. According this study, the risk of type 2 diabetes was found to decrease by 18% and 15% with habitual consumption of berries and anthocyanins from food sources respectively. The results of this study show that generous intake of berries and anthocyanins may confer individuals with significant protection against type 2 diabetes.
