Dietary antioxidant capacity and risk of type 2 diabetes in the large prospective E3N-EPIC cohort.

High dietary ingestion of foods loaded with antioxidants may slash the risk of type 2 diabetes in middle-aged women.

​This study was carried out to determine the role diets high in antioxidant rich foods play in the prevention of type 2 diabetes in women. Researchers surveyed a total 64,223 French middle-aged women for 15 years. During the course of the study, 1,756 participants were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. 

Researchers discovered that high consumers of foods packed with antioxidants had better chances of evading type 2 diabetes compared to their colleagues who rarely ate or completely avoided these foods. The data from this study suggest that women who want to cut down their risk of type 2 diabetes should add more antioxidant-containing foods to their diet.
