Associations of sugar-sweetened, artificially sweetened, and naturally sweet juices with Alzheimer's disease: a prospective cohort study
Swapping sugared beverages with 100% natural fruit and vegetable juices in our diet may lower our risk of having Alzheimer's disease.
The purpose of study was to determine if there is a connection between habitual intake of sugary beverages and pure natural fruit/vegetable juices and the onset of Alzheimer's disease. Researchers surveyed the dietary choices and health of more than 200,000 UK men and women free from dementia over a 9.5-year period. During the course of the study, up to 699 cases of Alzheimer's disease were recorded among the participants.
Researchers found increased prevalence of Alzheimer's disease among individuals who drank at least 2 units of sugar and artificial-sweetened beverages daily. In contrast, regular consumption of 100% natural fruit and vegetables juices was observed to decrease Alzheimer's disease risk in this study. Replacing sugary beverages with pure fruit and vegetable juices may brighten an individual's chances of warding off Alzheimer's disease, the researchers noted.
