Changes in fruit and vegetable consumption in relation to changes in sleep characteristics over a 3-month period among young adults

Upping the quantity and frequency of ingestion of fruits and vegetables may be beneficial for enhancing sleep quality and reducing the intensity of insomnia symptoms among young men and women.

This study determined if increased intake of fruits and vegetables is tied to improved sleep quality and insomnia symptoms among young adults. Researchers followed 1,165 US men and women whose food choices, sleep quality, and insomnia symptoms were monitored for 3 months.

Researchers discovered that participants on low fruit and vegetable diets who raised their level of consumption of these plant foods reported an increase in the quality of their sleep, shorter time to fall asleep, and a significant decrease in the severity of their insomnia symptoms. This study supports the notion that the more fruits and vegetables individuals consumed, the better the quality of sleep they will enjoy.
