Consumption of sweetened beverages is associated with the incidence of type 2 diabetes in Brazilian adults (CUME project)
Fondness for sugar-sweetened beverages may favor the development of type 2 diabetes.
This study examined if regular drinking of sweetened beverages is related to higher risk of having type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Researchers looked at the health data and sugary beverage drinking habits of 2,480 Brazilian men and women over a 4-year period.
Researchers discovered that the risk of suffering from type 2 diabetes went up with increase in the rate of ingestion of sugared beverages. "The results reinforce the need for marketing restrictions on these foods and taxation to reduce the consumption of these beverages to prevent T2DM and other chronic noncommunicable diseases," the researchers noted.
