Plain-water intake and risk of type 2 diabetes in young and middle-aged women.
Regular drinking of water instead of sugar beverages and fruit juices may contribute positively to the prevention of type 2 diabetes in young and middle-aged women.
This study investigated the relationship between the consumption of plain water and type 2 diabetes development risk in young and middle-aged women. Researchers estimated the type 2 diabetes hazard ratio and tracked the diets and water intake of 82,902 women with no previous history of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes mellitus recruited from the Nurses' Health Study.
The research team found out substituting one serving of sugar-sweetened beverages and fruit juices per day with a cup of plain water per day reduced the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes. On the other hand, regular drinking of plain water was found to have no significant effect on type 2 diabetes risk. The results of this study suggest that consuming plain water instead of sugary beverages and fruit juices may help cut down the chances of developing type 2 diabetes in young and middle-aged women.
