Smoking and risk of coronary heart disease among women with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Diabetic women who are cigarette smokers may be highly vulnerable to heart disease.
This study evaluated the relationship of cigarette smoking to the development of coronary heart disease in women with type 2 diabetes. Researchers tracked the smoking habits of 6,547 women recruited from the Nurses' Health Study Cohort who were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
The team of investigators found out that diabetic women who reported smoking cigarettes were at most risk of suffering from coronary heart disease compared to those who had never smoked a stick of cigarette. Cessation of smoking was found to decrease the odds of developing coronary heart disease among diabetic women in this study. The results of this study support recommendations that encourage women to quit smoking in order to cut down their risk of developing heart disease.
