Sugar-Sweetened Beverages and Depressive and Social Anxiety Symptoms Among Children and Adolescents Aged 7-17 Years, Stratified by Body Composition
Habitual drinking of sugar-sweetened beverages may elevate the likelihood of depressive symptoms occurring in children and adolescents.
This study focused on sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption and its impact on the incidence of depression and social anxiety in children and adolescents. Researchers examined nutritional data from 1,311 children and adolescents who used a questionnaire to report symptoms of depression and anxiety.
Researchers noted that devout consumers of sugary beverages faced increased risk of experiencing symptoms of depression. Evidence from this study suggest that the odds of suffering from depression may climb up in children and adolescents who loved drinking sugar-sweetened beverages.
