Consumption of 100% fruit juice and risk of obesity and metabolic syndrome: findings from the national health and nutrition examination survey 1999-2004.
Increased consumption of 100% unprocessed fruit juice may protect individuals against obesity and metabolic syndrome.
The objective of this research work was to determine the effect of high intake of 100% unprocessed fruit juice on obesity and metabolic syndrome risk. A team of researchers from the University of Minnesota looked at fruit juice consumption rates of 14,196 US adults and also estimated the relative risk of developing metabolic syndrome and obesity in each of the participant in this study.
The researchers observed that frequent consumers of 100% unprocessed fruit juice exhibited improved insulin sensitivity, were leaner, and had lower metabolic syndrome risk than non-consumers of this type of fruit juice. The findings of this study support the hypothesis that regular consumers of 100% unprocessed fruit juice may be less prone to suffer from metabolic syndrome and obesity.
