Dietary Animal-derived L-Arginine Intakes and Risk of Chronic Kidney Disease: a 6-year Follow-up of Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study.

Avid consumption of animal foods rich in L-arginine may up the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD).

This study evaluated the association between dietary exposure to L-arginine from animal sources and the probability of developing chronic kidney disease (CKD). Researchers followed 1,780 Iranian men and women for 6 years, monitoring their diets and health.

Researchers discovered that habitual consumers of L-arginine from animal foods faced increased risk of chronic kidney disease. "Our findings suggested an adverse effect of high intake of L-arginine from animal sources that could be a dietary risk factor for development of kidney disease," the authors stated.
