Legume intake and risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
High legume diets may be beneficial in the prevention of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
This study assessed whether there is a connection between increased intake of legumes and decreased risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Researchers examined the health data and eating habits of 196 Iranians newly diagnosed with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and 803 healthy individuals.
Researchers observed that high dietary ingestion of legumes, include peas, beans, and lentils, slashed the risk of having nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. The authors concluded that frequent consumption of legumes seems to be protective against nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
