Is cannabis use a contributory cause of psychosis?
Cannabis use may increase the incidence of psychotic disorders, such as schizophrenia, among adolescents and young adults.
This research work investigated the cannabis-psychosis connection hypothesis. Researchers utilized data drawn out from 6 studies conducted in 5 countries.
Researchers observed that the odds of having psychotic disorders, such as schizophrenia, in adolescents and young adults rose with the use of cannabis. The authors concluded that "it is most plausible that cannabis use precipitates schizophrenia in individuals who are vulnerable because of a personal or family history of schizophrenia."
