Perforated duodenal ulcer and cigarette smoking
Perforated duodenal ulcer is more likely to occur in cigarette smokers.
This study determined whether an association exists between cigarette smoking and the perforation of duodenal ulcer. Researchers looked at the smoking habits of 275 patients hospitalized for peptic ulcer and 275 persons without the disease.
Researchers found out that cigarette smoking accounted for 86% of cases of perforated duodenal ulcer in the study population. The data from this study provide further evidence that cigarette smokers may be highly prone to suffering from perforated duodenal ulcer.
