Association between hypercholesterolemia and isolated and simultaneous consumption of ultra-processed foods in older adults

Opting for ultra-processed foods may lead to hypercholesterolemia in older men and women.

This study looked at how a high ultra-processed food diet influences plasma levels of cholesterol in elderly men and women. Researchers compared the level of ultra-processed food consumption with the concentrations of cholesterol floating in the blood of 1,322 older men and women from Brazil.

Researchers noticed elevated serum cholesterol levels (hypercholesterolemia) among participants who enjoyed eating ultra-processed foods regularly. The findings of this study revealed that routine consumption of ample amounts of ultra-processed foods may facilitate the development of hypercholesterolemia in elderly men and women.
