Association Between Ultra-Processed Food Consumption and Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders: Results From the French NutriNet-Santé Cohort
Eating a diet centered around ultra-processed foods may fuel the development of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
This study evaluated the relationship between the frequency of ultra-processed food consumption and the chances of developing functional gastrontestinal disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The eating habits and rate of occurrence of functional gastrointestinal disorders among 33,343 French men and women were ascertained through dietary questionnaires and hospital records.
Researchers noted that devout consumers of ultra-processed foods exhibited a high tendency to develop irritable bowel syndrome. This study points out that indulging in ultra-processed foods regularly may have a negative effect on bowel health.
