Association of sweetened beverage intake with incident hypertension.

The odds of developing hypertension may be stacked against high consumers of sugary beverages.

This study evaluated the relationship between regular intake of sweetened beverages and the probability of developing hypertension. Researchers compared the rate of consumption of sugary beverages with the incidence of hypertension in a cohort comprising of more than 130,000 US men and women.

Researchers noted that frequent drinking of sugared beverages  resulted in higher risk of hypertension in both men and women. This study supports the view that generous consumption of sweetened beverages may be a contributing factor to the development of hypertension.
