Do vegetables and fruits reduce the risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease? A case-control study in Japan.
Generous consumption of vegetables may confer individuals with significant protection against chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
This study was carried out to confirm the protective effects of fruits and vegetables against chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Researchers reviewed dietary and clinical data obtained from 278 COPD patients and 340 healthy subjects residing in Japan.
The researchers noted that the rate of consumption of vegetables was significantly higher in the healthy subjects than in the COPD patients. According to this study, a 52% reduction in COPD risk was found in individuals who belong to the highest category of vitamin A consumption from fruits and vegetables. The findings of this study reveal that a high vegetable diet may help guard against the occurrence of COPD.
