Cigarette smoking and chronic kidney disease in the general population: a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies.
Current and past cigarette smokers are more liable to develop chronic kidney disease than never smokers.
This study examined how cigarette smoking affects the risk of developing chronic kidney disease (CKD) in adults. Researchers analyzed data on the association between cigarette smoking and chronic kidney disease obtained from 15 prospective cohort studies that examined 65,064 cases of chronic kidney disease.
Researchers found out that current and previous cigarette smokers were more likely to develop chronic kidney disease and end-renal stage disease than never smokers. Data from this meta-analysis suggest that cigarette smoking may increase the incidence of chronic kidney disease in the general population.
