Ultra-processed food consumption and the risk of incident chronic kidney disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies

Eating ultra-processed foods regularly may set an individual on the path to developing chronic kidney disease (CKD).

This study assessed the risk of developing chronic kidney disease (CKD) based on the level of consumption of ultra-processed foods. Researchers evaluated the dietary and medical records of 219,132 men and women who participated in 5 studies.

Researchers noticed that the higher the frequency and amount of ultra-processed foods people consumed, the more vulnerable they are to having chronic kidney disease. The data from this study showed that consistent ingestion of ultra-processed foods may be a contributing factor to the growing burden of chronic kidney disease globally.
