Consumption of Flavonoid-Rich Fruits and Risk of Coronary Heart Disease: A Prospective Cohort Study
Following a diet rich in flavonoid-containing fruits may help fend off coronary heart disease.
This study was carried out to confirm the protective effect of fruits high in flavonoids against coronary heart disease (CHD). Researchers examined the health data and eating habits of 1,156 patients with coronary heart disease and 87,177 Japanese men and women free from the disease for an average of 13.2 years.
Researchers observed reduced risk of coronary heart disease in participants who preferred consuming flavonoid-rich fruits, especially citrus fruits. These findings demonstrate that higher intake of fruits packed with flavonoids can improve an individual's chances of avoiding coronary heart disease.
