Risk of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus in Relation to Maternal Egg and Cholesterol Intake

Gestational diabetes is more likely to occur in pregnant women who enjoyed consuming high-cholesterol foods, such as eggs.

This study evaluated the intake of eggs and other cholesterol-containing foods in relation to the development of gestational diabetes (GDM). Researchers matched the frequency of consumption of cholesterol-rich foods with the occurrence of gestational diabetes among 596 pregnant women.

Researchers found out that participants who regularly consumed generous amounts of eggs and other high-cholesterol foods before and during pregnancy experienced a significant jump in their risk of gestational diabetes. The results of this study indicate that fondness for high cholesterol foods, such as eggs, may be a factor that contributes to the development of gestational diabetes.
