Processed red meat intake and risk of COPD: A systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies.
Regular consumers of processed meats may be at increased risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
The purpose of this study was to analyze data extracted from previously published studies that examined the relationship between the intake of processed red meat and the risk of acquiring chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Data from 5 cohort studies were included for this meta-analysis.
Researchers observed that COPD occurred with greater frequency in individuals who habitually consumed processed meats compared to their peers who refrained from eating these types of foods. According to this study, each 50 gram of processed meat consumed per week was found to increase COPD risk by 8%. This study adds to the growing body of literature describing a positive association between generous intake of processed meats and elevated COPD risk.
