Allium vegetable intake and risk of acute myocardial infarction in Italy.
Eating more onions and garlic may make myocardial infarction less likely to occur.
This study assessed the correlation between the intake of allium vegetables, such as onions and garlic, and the incidence of myocardial infarction in Italy. Researchers compared the diets of 730 patients who had experienced their first episode of non-fatal acute myocardial infarction with that of 632 healthy subjects.
The team of investigators discovered that individuals with the highest rate of consumption of onions and garlic had the lowest risk of myocardial infarction. The findings of this study show that fondness for onions and garlic may be beneficial in the prevention of myocardial infarction.
