Dietary fiber intake and cognitive impairment in older patients with chronic kidney disease in the United States: A cross-sectional study

Strict adherence to a high fiber diet may help curtail the onset of cognitive decline in older adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD).

This study evaluated if adequate consumption of fiber-ladened foods is strongly linked to reduced risk of cognitive decline in older persons suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD). Researchers examined 2,461 adults aged 60 years and above with regards to their eating habits, cognitive function, and diagnosis status of CKD.

Researchers noticed that participants with CKD who ate the high amounts of fiber-rich foods had low tendency to experience an impairment in cognitive function. The results of this study support the addition of fiber-containing foods to the diet of older adults with CKD in order to decrease their chances of suffering from cognitive decline.
