Alcoholic Beverage Consumption and Risk of Breast Cancer in Spain
Regular intake of alcoholic beverages may favor the development of breast cancer.
This study clarified the association between the ingestion of alcoholic beverages and the likelihood of acquiring breast cancer. With the aid of validated questionnaires, researchers collated and analyzed information on the alcohol drinking habits of 762 patients with breast cancer and 988 Spanish women without the disease.
Researchers noted that women with alcohol intake levels of less than 8 grams and more than 20 grams per day experienced a 50% and 70% elevation respectively in their risk of breast cancer compared to non-consumers of alcoholic beverages. This study demonstrates that avid consumption of alcohol may set the stage for the occurrence of breast cancer in women.
