Effects of 7 days on an ad libitum low-fat vegan diet: the McDougall Program Cohort.
Healthy cardiovascular and metabolic profiles are associated with frequent consumption of low-fat vegan diets.
This study evaluated the effect of a 7 day ad libitum low-fat vegan diet on the biomarkers of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Researchers placed 1615 participants drawn from the McDougall Program Cohort on ad libitum low-fat, starch-based, and moderate sodium vegan diets for 7 days. The weight, blood pressure, blood lipids, blood sugar, and cardiovascular disease hazard ratio were measured in all the subjects.
At the conclusion of dietary intervention, researchers discovered a decrease in weight, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, total cholesterol levels, serum concentrations of blood glucose, and cardiovascular disease hazard ratios in type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease patients, even after the discontinuation of their medications. The results of this study show that ingesting of low-fat, starch-based, and moderate sodium vegan diets may improve cardiovascular and metabolic health in patients suffering from cardiovascular ailments and type 2 diabetes.
