Red/processed meat consumption and non-cancer-related outcomes in humans: umbrella review

Sticking to a diet high in red and processed meat may drive up an individual's chances of developing and dying from chronic diseases, such as stroke, hypertension, heart failure, coronary heart disease (CHD), and type 2 diabetes mellitus.

This study focused on how the frequency of intake of red meat influences the burden of non-cancerous chronic disease. Researchers sifted through data obtained from 40 studies.

Researchers noticed that the more red and processed meat people ate, the greater their chances of having stroke, hypertension, heart failure, coronary heart disease (CHD), and type 2 diabetes mellitus and dying from these diseases. This study concluded that "red and processed meat consumption seems to be more harmful than beneficial to human health in this umbrella review."
