Dietary fiber in food and protection against colorectal cancer in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC): an observational study.

Fiber-rich foods may offer adequate protecton against  colorectal cancer.

This study examined the effect of fiber from foods on colorectal cancer risk. Researchers tracked the diets and the incidence of colorectal cancer among 519,978 subjects between the ages of 25-70 years recruited from 10 European countries.

The team of investigators observed that subjects with high intake of fiber-rich foods had low chances of developing colorectal cancer. Increased consumption of high fiber diets was found to reduce colorectal cancer risk by 40% in this study. The findings of this study indicate diets loaded with foods high in fiber may help inhibit the development cancerous cells and tumors in the colon and rectum.
