Ultra-Processed Food Consumption and Gastrointestinal Cancer Risk: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Habitual consumers of ultra-processed foods may be at risk of developing colorectal and stomach cancer.

This study assessed if greater intake of ultra-processed foods is tied to higher risk of gastrointestinal cancer. Researchers performed a comprehensive meta-analysis on data obtained from 5 studies involving more than 1 million men and women. 

Data analysis revealed an upward trend in the incidence of colorectal and gastric (stomach) cancer among lovers of ultra-processed foods. This meta-analysis demonstrated that increased consumption of ultra-processed foods may promote the formation and growth of cancerous cells and tumors in the stomach, colon, and rectum.
