Ultra-processed food consumption, cancer risk and cancer mortality: a large-scale prospective analysis within the UK Biobank
Promoting the consumption of ultra-processed foods may result in a spike in the incidence and mortality from cancer.
This study focused on ultra-processed food contribution to cancer morbidity and mortality burden. Researchers surveyed nearly 200,000 UK men and women over a 9-year period. During the course of the study, up to 15,921 participants had cancer and a total of 4,009 persons died from the disease.
The team of researchers noticed that high rate of ingestion of ultra-processed foods increased the risk of developing and dying from cancer. This 2023 study of UK men and women documented an unfavorable association between elevated consumption of ultra-processed foods and heightened risk of cancer occurrence and mortality.
