Cancer incidence attributable to insufficient fibre consumption in Alberta in 2012

Adequate ingestion of fiber-rich foods may confer an individual with significant protection against colorectal cancer.

This study assessed how the frequency of consumption of high-fiber foods affects colorectal cancer diagnosis rates in Canada. With the aid of dietary questionnaires and the Alberta Cancer Registry, researchers collected and collated data on the fiber intake levels and the prevalence of colorectal cancer among individuals residing in Alberta, Canada.

Data analysis revealed that 6% of all cases of colorectal cancer diagnosed in Alberta in 2012 was attributed to low dietary ingestion of fiber. This study supports the addition of generous amounts of fiber-containing foods to our diet as a viable preventive measure against colorectal cancer.
