Ultra-processed foods and food additives in gut health and disease

Food additives and ultra-processed foods may have harmful effect on gut health and lead to the development of diseases, such as colorectal cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, and inflammatory bowel disease.

This study examined whether an association exists between indulgence in ultra-processed foods and the development of gut diseases, such as colorectal cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, and inflammatory bowel disease. Researchers reviewed evidence obtained from relevant human and animal studies.

Researchers found a strong connection between increased dietary exposure to ultra-processed foods and food additives and the occurrence of several digestive tract diseases, including colorectal cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, and inflammatory bowel disease. This study further affirmed the notion that generous consumption of food additives and ultra-processed foods may be detrimental to gut health.
