Fruit and vegetable intake and the risk of gastric adenocarcinoma: a reanalysis of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC-EURGAST) study after a longer follow-up.

Generous intake of large servings of fruits, especially citrus fruits, may help guard against the
development of gastric cancer.

This study examined the effect of fruit and vegetable consumption on the odds of developing diffused and cardia gastric (stomach) cancer. Researchers collated and analyzed data on the level of fruit and vegetable consumption of 477,312 male and female subjects recruited from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer (EPIC) cohort. The stomach cancer hazard ratio of each participant in this study was also determined.

Researchers observed that a substantial reduction in the risk of diffused and cardia gastric cancer was associated with high dietary intake of fruits, especially citrus fruits. On the other hand, increased consumption of vegetables was found to have no significant effect on gastric cancer risk in this study. The results of this study show that individuals on diets loaded with fruits are less prone to develop stomach cancer.
